It’s been weeks since the IRS first sent coronavirus stimulus check eligible American taxpayers. If you are still waiting for your payment, you may be looking for answers: Where is it? Is something causing a delay? While the explanation can be as simple as the IRS planning your disbursement for later in the year, we have uncovered some real hurdles that could block your check.

Before you start, it’s important to know or get the money. Your stimulus payment could arrive by direct deposit into your bank account, if you had implemented before the May 13 deadline. At this point, however, it is more likely that you will get it in the mail. It will arrive either by paper check or by check prepaid debit card. The IRS started processing your paper check before submitting your direct deposit information

If the IRS was already preparing to mail your paper check when you provided your banking information online, you will still receive your check by mail. The IRS said it can generally take up to 14 days to receive payment in this situation.

The banking information that the IRS has for you is out of date or no longer valid

The IRS said it used bank information from your 2018 or 2019 tax return to send your payment. Some tax preparers, however, open temporary accounts for their clients to receive their returns, such as a prepaid debit card. If this is the information the IRS has for you, the agency has said that the payment would be returned and restated.

If for any reason the bank information that the IRS has for you is not valid, the agency says it will mail your check to you. The IRS said to check its Get My Payment tool for updates.
