The value of the trade-in offer was unclear on Monday evening.
While Postmates gained early popularity in coastal cities – especially Los Angeles – the company struggled to compete with much larger competitors like DoorDash, GrubHub and Uber Eats. In February, Postmates confidentially filed an advertising request.
The category is ripe for consolidation. Uber has held merger talks this year with GrubHub, a food delivery competitor. But the talks collapsed after the two companies failed to reach a price agreement, two people familiar with the matter said. GrubHub was finally bought by Just Eats, a European food delivery service, for $ 7.3 billion in June.
Shortly after signing the deal with GrubHub, Uber began to replenish a potential offer for Postmates, one of the few independent American companies delivering food.
Postmates have also had sales interviews with DoorDash and GrubHub in the past year, according to two people familiar with the situation, who refused to be identified because the interviews were private.
Postmates was created in 2011 by Sam Street, Sean Plaice and Bastian Lehmann, who is the managing director. He managed to capture the heart of Hollywood, with the approval of celebrities like Kylie Jenner and singer John Legend. It even marked an investment by actor Jared Leto.
