U. N. vote treaty Trudeau embarrassing defeat on the world stage

Despite being one of the founders of the U. N. member and part of the G-7 and G-20, the size of Canada and the history one more time counted for little: the government of Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper was beaten by Portugal in 2010, as the former colonial power, has been in the midst of the humiliating EU bailout.

Canada had boasted about his membership in the community of Nations, the Francophonie, the international organization of French-speaking countries; and the Organization of American States, as well as its status as an Arctic nation. Canada’s diversity has meant that he could be a voice for many at the U. N., the ambassador to the U. N., Marc-André Blanchard, told POLITICO on Monday.

Each country had two votes in each regional category. Of the 192 votes in the Western Europe and Other” category, Norway received 130, Ireland, 128 and Canada 108.

In other regions, India (184 votes) and Mexico (187 votes) easily won their competition, while Kenya and Djibouti will lead to a ballot for the African seat on Thursday, after none of the two countries obtained the required two-thirds majority.

United Nations ambassadors have voted to isolation and to wear masks — in the different time slots throughout the week of the U. N. headquarters in New York.

The result marks the end of years of campaigning, and deals with symbolic damages to the canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, internationalist image.

The conservative Leader Andrew Scheer blasted Trudeau’s stewardship of the campaign this week, accusing him of making the court of human rights abusers for votes and to tarnish the image of Canada in the pursuit of a “personal vanity” project.

“The prime minister cannot bring himself to criticize the dictators and tyrants around the world who abuse human rights,” the official opposition leader said on Wednesday.

Trudeau had deviated from the critical supply of Conservatives with a nod of the head in Canada in 2010 loss under Harper, whose foreign policy he said was an “embarrassment” to Canadians.

Speaking before the vote, the leader of the Liberal party sought to downplay its importance: “A seat on the Security Council of the U. N. is not an end in itself. It is a means to an end,” he said, adding that Canada will continue to be a voice for others on the international scene, and not just himself, regardless of the outcome.

Richard Gowan, U. N. Director of the International Crisis Group, said U. N. diplomats broadly agree Canada’s team “campaign.”

With Norway, Ireland and Canada all taking similar approaches to global problems such as climate change, multilateralism and peacekeeping, Canada is relatively late in the race, and stumbles as Trudeau brownface scandal — hurt the ability of Canada to stand out and make his case.

While Ireland and Norway have declared their candidacy in 2005 and 2007, respectively, Canada has jumped into the race in 2016: it is already too late to win the Indian vote, which had committed its voice in Ireland and Norway, in a vote by the swap agreement the Hindustan Times reported.

The Canadian government has disbursed approximately $ 1.7 million and employed 13 full-time staff of the campaign, compared to Norway’s $ 2.8 million budget and Ireland on $ 1 million. Ireland I bought U2 and Riverdance tickets for the diplomats, and Canada, and Celine Dion tickets, the BBC has reported, in addition to gifts such as greeting cards, chocolates and products with the Canada brand masks.

Norway went for a low-key platform, supported by a development budget. Norway is the most generous donor on a per capita basis. With a population of nearly five million people, Norway, earlier this year, has promised $ 1 billion in aid to the global coronavirus response, and donated nearly 1 percent of their gross national income to development assistance, compared to Canada, at about 0.3 percent. Ireland has 474 peacekeepers deployed on U. N. missions compared to Canada’s 35.
