Donald Trump visited one of his own private golf courses in Virginia on Saturday as America continued to see the fallout from a rapid outbreak of coronavirus cases and a day after the President said he would stay in Washington DC to “ensure that law and order were respected” amid the ongoing anti-racist protests.
The President has been frequently criticized for the extent of his golfing experience during his tenure. CNN – which lists its golfing activities – said that the Trump National course visit in County Loudon, just outside Washington DC, was the 271st day of his presidency, which put him on average playing at golf once every 4.6 days since taking office. His predecessor, Barack Obama, has played 333 rounds during the two terms of his presidency, according to NBC.
The visit comes as the number of new confirmed cases of coronavirus per day in the United States has reached an all-time high of 40,000, according to figures released Friday by Johns Hopkins. Many states are now seeing virus spikes, with Texas, Florida and Arizona being particularly hard hit after reopening their economies – a policy they pause or reverse.
Trump has come under heavy criticism for his inability to lead during the coronavirus that has seen America by far the most affected country in the world. Critics point out in particular his inability to wear a mask, organize campaign rallies in coronavirus hotspots, and tout unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about remedies, such as the use of bleach.
Trump tweeted Friday night that he was canceling a weekend at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey because of protests that rocked the capital, including the demolition of statues of Confederate figures.
“I was going to Bedminster, New Jersey this weekend, but I wanted to stay in Washington, D.C. to make sure LAW AND ORDER were enforced. The arsonists, anarchists, looters and agitators have been largely arrested, “he tweeted.
Trump’s last visit to the golf course was not without criticism. According to a media report from the White House swimming pool: “A small group of protesters at the entrance to the club displayed signs including” Trump Makes Me Sick “and” Dump Trump “.
A woman walking a small white dog nearby also greeted the middle finger. “
It is not yet known if Trump actually played a round of golf. But a photographer captured the president wearing a white polo shirt and a red cap, which is part of his usual golf outfits.
