Donald Trump has defended the police officer who shot and killed Rayshard Brooks in Atlanta, as a number of officers called in sick after their colleague was charged with murder.
Garrett Rolfe, a white officer, shot Brooks, who is black, twice in the back, as Brooks pointed out a police Taser stun gun in his direction when running away. Rolfe faces 11 charges over the killing.
A significant number of agents do not have to work in the night of Wednesday, the city’s police department said. Atlanta mayor suggested that the city may call in agents from other administrations.
Brooks’s death has sparked protests in the city and elsewhere, it appeared that Brooks, 27, was 18ft of Rolfe, and flee, when he made the Taser – where prosecutors say Rolfe knew was not functional before being shot dead.
The events on the Streams of the dead have added to the protests against racism and police brutality across the country following the death of George Floyd, in Minneapolis, last month, where the 46-year-old was killed when a white police officer knelt on his neck.
In the midst of the outrage, Trump appeared on Fox News, where he defended Rolfe and seemed to criticize Brooks.
“You can’t resist a police officer, and if you have a disagreement, you have to take after shot,” Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “It was out of control, the situation was out of control.”
Trump has said that the police had been treated unfairly in the united states.
He said: “It is up to the justice now. It is up to justice. I hope that it [Rolfe] gets a fair treatment, because the police have not been treated fairly in our country. But again, you can not resist a police officer, like that.”
The Atlanta police department sought to minimize the number of agents who have not submitted, but has admitted there are a large number of absences.
“The suggestions that several of the officers of each area had left the place of work were inaccurate,” the ministry said in a tweet. “The ministry is faced with a larger number of call-outs with the future shift. We have sufficient resources to maintain operations and remain able to respond to incidents.”
Atlanta mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, said to CNN, there were enough members to cover the city, but said the department may appeal to the police by other agencies.
She said: “We have other partners … so we’ll be fine.”
The most serious charge against Rolfe, the crime of murder, carries a sentence of life in prison or the death penalty, prosecutors should choose to seek it.
On Thursday, the video of the interview that Brooks had carried out until 2019, within the framework of a project on penal reform, was shared by the company Reconnect.
In it, Brooks describes how the criminal justice system treats many people unfairly. He said: “Some people, they get a slap on the wrist [from the authorities]. But some people do not.”
Brooks discussed the way in which people who had spent time in jail were treated on their release. He said: “You get treated like an animal. A part of the system could look at us as individuals; we have the life, you know.”
He added: “I’ll try, I’m not the kind of person to give up. I will continue until I get to where I want to be.”
Brooks funeral will be held at a church in Atlanta on Tuesday. Actor and director Tyler Perry, who lives in the city, offered to pay for the funeral.
In an article for People magazine, Perry said that he was struggling with how to explain racism in the united states for his five-year-old son.
He wrote: “I know that, like his father, a black man in America, it is my duty to prepare them for the harsh reality that awaits them outside the watchful eye of his loving parents. This will be a hard, heartbreaking conversation, but that I must have and will have soon.”
