A top State Department official resigned Thursday, in the light of President Donald Trump’s response to racial injustice, The Washington Post reported.

Mary Elizabeth Taylor had served as assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs since Trump took office in January 2017. It has been one of the highest Black officials in the Trumpet of the administration.

Taylor has submitted his letter of resignation to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, wrote that his departure followed the ” dictates of my conscience. ”

“Times of upheaval can change, move the trajectory of your life, and mold your character,” Taylor wrote in the letter, which was obtained by The Post. “The President’s comments and actions surrounding racial injustice and Black Americans to cut sharply against my core values and beliefs. ”

Taylor said she was “deeply grateful” to Pompeo for ” give it to me at the head of this team and strategically advise you in the course of these past two years. ”

“You have shown grace and respect to listen to my opinions, and your remarkable leadership has made me a better leader and team member,” she wrote in the letter. “I appreciate that you understand my loyalty to my personal beliefs and values, in particular in the light of recent events. ”

Taylor’s resignation seems to be the first high-profile departure prompted by means of responding to the request to the address of the police reform and inequality racial.

Black Lives Matter, protests erupted across the country since the assassination of George Floyd, a Black man who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes.

While Trump called Floyd’s death a “grave tragedy,” the president has also name-dropped Floyd when touting the recovery of the economy and condemned the protesters and their calls to defund the police.

Earlier this month, Taylor wrote a message to his team at the State Department on Floyd’s death, writes that his “heart is broken, in a way that I had to care for a countless number of times,” The Post reported, who has got the message as well.

“George Floyd is a horrible murder and the recent deaths of other Black Americans have shaken our country at heart,” she wrote. “Every time we are witnesses of these heinous, murderous events, we are reminded that our country’s wounds are deep and are not treated. ”

“For our team members who are struggling now, please know that you are not alone,” she said. “You are seen, recognized, heard, and supported. I am here with you. “
