The Roosevelt Bridge in Stuart, Florida is “threatened with imminent collapse,” warns the Coast Guard.

The Roosevelt Bridge at Stuart is “threatened with imminent collapse,” warned the United States Coast Guard.Authorities have closed southbound lanes indefinitely. The northbound lanes have been divided to accommodate southbound and northbound traffic. Commercial boating has been discontinued.

The Roosevelt Bridge was built 24 years ago and spans the Saint Lucia River.

“We expect heavy traffic delays during the morning commutes and recommend avoiding this area. Please consider traveling to Hutchinson Island, Palm City or Sewalls Point to enter the city of Stuart from the north, “the department said in a statement.

“We apologize for the delays, but the safety of all motorists and pedestrians is our priority. We will update this message as soon as the information becomes available. ”

CNN affiliate WPTV reported that a large crack had appeared along the south end of the bridge.

Coast Guard has established a safety zone to prevent commercial maritime traffic from passing under the bridge.
