23:30 GMT – researchers discover a new swine influenza with pandemic potential
Researchers have discovered a new type of swine flu may cause a pandemic, according to a study published in the us scientific journal PNAS.
Influenza G4 is genetically result of the H1N1 strain that was the origin of the pandemic in 2009.
G4 has “all the essential characteristics of being highly adapted to infect humans,” the researchers write.
They added that the G4 was already predominant in pigs and cthe control of infection in pigs and close monitoring of persons working with animals should be ” implemented “emergency.
The study evaluated by peers has been written by scholars of the agricultural University, China agricultural University, Shandong, Centres chinese control and disease prevention, the chinese Academy of sciences and the University of Nottingham.
