Report: Newton accepts one-year agreement with the Patriots

Quarterback Cam Newton has signed a one-year incentive agreement with the New England Patriots, sources say. ESPN Adam Schefter. The 31-year-old appeared in just two games with the Carolina Panthers in 2019 after suffering an early fracture at Lisfranc. His rehabilitation took longer than expected and he ended the year on the casualty reserve.

In March, the Panthers released the 2015 MVP after nine seasons.

Newton, the top overall pick in 2011, led Carolina to a 15-1 record in 2015, with 3,837 yards and 35 touchdowns, while chasing 636 yards and 10 scores. The Pro Bowler three times was named offensive rookie of the year in 2011 and offensive player of the year four years later.

Newton’s future with the Panthers was questioned when the team decided to rebuild. Carolina has named Matt Rhule her new head coach in the off season, and the team has signed with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater for a three-year contract.

The Patriots, meanwhile, lost quarterback Tom Brady in the first days of free will. Second-year flagman Jarrett Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer are the other options on the New England quarterback depth chart.
