Removal of Jerry Richardson statue allows owner David Tepper to move on from the Panthers’ past

We Need to Talk: Matt Rhule on Panthers Training During a Pandemic

Richardson, the disgraced former owner of the team who put his life on sale a few hours after an explosive Sports Illustrated article detailing misconduct at work, had essentially required that anyone to whom he sold the team must keep his statue in front in perpetuity.

Tepper held his nose and accepted the deal. He had been a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and realized that his hometown, the Steelers, would never leave the Rooney family while he was alive. Only so many NFL teams go on sale, and that was his chance.

In addition, Tepper made a bet. He wanted to conclude the deal as soon as possible because the United States Supreme Court had just ruled that states could individually legalize sports games. He thought that if he waited longer, the price of the franchise would increase as Richardson realized how sports games would eventually increase the value of his assets.

And so it was that as long as the Carolina Panthers were the Carolina Panthers, the 12 foot 10 inch statue of Jerry Richardson surrounded by two panthers with a large … male anatomy would remain. He couldn’t throw a big shroud over it. Impossible to plant oaks around. You couldn’t build a taller statue next door, even if he wanted to. All of that was written into the agreement.

The only way for Tepper to move this statue was to become a security danger. If rotten vandals collapsed at the base of the sculpture and made jagged edges, it would be a problem at one of the three entrances to a 70,000-seat stadium, for example.

Or – and it’s a crazy thought, I know – if the protesters led here in Charlotte were targeting the statue. If centuries of oppression continue to boil over and people have decided that they do not want a memorial to a man who cursed and bathed in misogyny.

Well, what do you know? The Panthers said in a statement on Wednesday that they were “concerned that there may be attempts” to bring down the statue and that “moving the statue is in the interest of public safety.”

Look, if you think this statue is going up, I have a bridge to sell you.

Tepper never wanted the statue. If you bought a house, would you want to keep the previous owner’s wedding photos on the coat?

I cannot say whether the threat from some intrepid citizens to take charge was real. If you’re the type who cares about monitoring the destruction of property that doesn’t belong to you, Charlotte has only really had one night since the protests started weeks ago. This city was not on fire. To my knowledge, no anonymous anti-fascist group was planning to dismantle a statue this week. Yet Tepper can reasonably get away with this excuse at this point in our nation’s history.

Admittedly, Jerry Richardson is not Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who is now charged with second degree murder in the death of George Floyd. Richardson does not directly represent the power structures that allowed and allowed police brutality against blacks.

What Richardson represents – and what he experienced – is a system of abuse of power. To commit several acts of sexual harassment against female employees and to use a racial insult directed against a black scout, according to a Sports Illustrated 2017 report that has never been refuted by Richardson either publicly or in an NFL investigation.

According to the report, Richardson would ask the employees if he could shave their legs. The friction on the back went too low and / or too long. He had buckled up able-bodied women in their seats with his “seat belt maneuver” which would allow him to graze a woman’s breasts with his hand.

An employee, annoyed by the slow investigation of the NFL, then wrote an open letter to Sports Illustrated which detailed other allegations like Richardson rubbing his legs and feet, asking her to turn around so he could see what she looked like in jeans, putting her hands to her mouth to kiss her and, of course , the operation of the seat belt. (Richardson declined to respond to these allegations, and a Richardson spokesperson told a Charlotte TV Station Richardson on Wednesday “made an effort to treat everyone fairly in his professional and personal life. “)

The Richardson status withdrawal and securing process took approximately 32 minutes. Five workers in reflective vests began by putting straps around Richardson’s chest and arms before a crane was attached to one of the loops. The workers then sawed and forced Richardson’s feet onto the four-foot pedestal before Richardson began to float to a plateau.

He lowered himself easily, the crane placing him lightly on his right side before rolling him gently flat on his back. A black man in a pink shirt and helmet guided the crane operator all the time, signaling directions with one hand while stabilizing the statue on Richardson’s left foot with the other hand.

It wasn’t the kind of foot rubbing that Richardson envisioned.
