Ray Borg eliminated, Gustavo Lopez fights Merab Dvalisvhili

(Editor’s note: update added to reflect changes in Lopez’s contractual situation with Combate Americas.)Ray Borg left the UFC on ESPN 10.

Borg (13-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC), a former UFC title challenger, withdrew from his fight with Merab Dvalishvili for personal reasons. UFC newcomer Gustavo Lopez will take the place of Borg. The bout will take place at a clean weight of 140 pounds.

The UFC announced Borg’s withdrawal during Thursday’s virtual media day. Dvalishvili manager Oren Hodak and Lopez manager Danny Rubenstein of Ruby Sports & Entertainment both confirmed the new match against MMA Junkie shortly after.

Borg seemed indicate on Twitter that his last-minute withdrawal had something to do with his son’s well-being.

Family first, soon son.

Lopez (11-4 MMA, 0-0), the current bantamweight champion of the Americas, has won three straight games entering his promotional debut. In 11 wins, Lopez finished eight opponents.

Dvalishvili (10-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) also won three straight fights after losing his first two with promotion. The most recent Georgian bantamweight fight took place at the UFC on ESPN + 25 in February, when he defeated the then UFC-ranked Casey Kenney. Dvalishvili also holds victories over Brad Katona, Terrion Ware, Raufeon Stots and Tony Gravely.

UPDATE: After announcing that Lopez will step in to fight Dvalishvili, Combate Americas CEO Campbell McLaren tweeted that Lopez made a “bad move” because he remains under contract:

Wrong movement of @Gustavo11Lopez he is under contract with @fighting americas

Lopez manager later acknowledged on Twitter that he “made a mistake” and formally requested his release from the promotion.

As a manager, I made a mistake and @fighting americas has the right corresponding to @Gustavo11Lopez and I officially requested his release so that he can fight this weekend at the UFC in Las Vegas. @campbellcombate

The story will be updated once a resolution is found on this situation.
