Penn Badgley has responded to the sexual harassment and misconduct allegations against her You costar Chris d’elia, telling the Los Angeles Times he was “very disturbed by it.” Elia has been accused of sexual harassment, including the solicitation of nude photos of minors, for many women, the last week. He has also played a predator actor named Henderson, who in the same way exploited minor girls on Youfor the second season. Speaking on the Los Angeles Times’ Can’t Stop Watching podcast, Badgley said, “It does touch me deeply. I was very disturbed by it. I am very disturbed by it. I don’t know Chris. I know that if there is something we need to do in this age is to believe the women.” Badgley also revealed that You the producers had contacted 17-year-old actress Jenna Ortega, who played a teen victim of Elia Henderson on Youthe second of the season, after the accusations against Elia broke up last week. “The first thing that our producers have not been paid to Jenna, who played Ellie, the girl in front of Chris in those scenes, just to make sure that she felt safe. You can feel safe and sound, it is,” Badgley said.
Badgley has been open in the past about his discomfort portrait You’s main character, Joe Goldberg, a psychopathic murderer who, however, has developed a passionate fan base among the viewers. “The idea of a show like ours would have indirectly, without the desire to be a refuge for people who are violent, it is disturbing. It is very worrying,” Badgley continued on Can’t Stop Watching. “A show like ours help to create this culture? Well, I know that at least our show … to think about things in a decommissioning, deconstructive way. I hope that at least our show is not used to defend this kind of, like, superimposed ways of being and these systems, is it not?”
