Paul Merson urged Chelsea to pull all the stops to beat Manchester United at the signing of Dortmund star Jadon Sancho this summer. The Blues have already reached an agreement to sign Ajax to attack midfielder Hakim Ziyech at the end of the season for £ 33.6m, while they are near confirmation of the signing of the RB Leipzig, striker Timo Werner for a price of around £ 53m.

They don’t seem inclined to stop there, and that have also been linked to Leicester rear Ben Chilwell and Bayer Leverkusen, winger Kai Havertz.

But speaking of StarSport, Merson says Sancho – who has 17 goals and 16 assists in the Bundesliga this season – is the Chelsea player to focus on trying to sign it.

Jadon Sancho is strongly linked to a move to the Premier League

“I don’t think Chelsea spending will stop (with Ziyech and Werner),” Merson said.

“Obviously they still want Jadon Sancho, and if they can’t get him they will probably try Kai Havertz.

“One of them will cost almost 100 mł. But this kind of pay transfer for itself. Chelsea could get a good five years from Sancho and still get a big resell.

“You have every chance of getting your money back with a player like Sancho. And if Abramovich starts coming to matches again, they want to be entertained. He would not care to pay £ 100m for a Sancho, if it allows them to play good football.

“Werner’s signature is a great statement. But the Sancho signature would be an even bigger one. ”

Much will depend on Chelsea to qualify for the Champions League with the Blues currently ranked fourth, just three points above United.

Their trip to Aston Villa on Sunday before two tricky-looking games against Manchester City and Leicester are followed by a London derby against West Ham.
