A 3-0 win over an already relegated Middlesbrough, next to the last day of the season, Liverpool have confirmed the spot of the next year of the Champions League.
And they looked set to embark on this journey to Kiev with Clyne locked to the rear right.
Klopp’s exciting side, there is a work in progress, but has the potential to become a football force at the end of the summit of English football. It seems that Clyne has been configured to be part of the rise, too.
Thirty-seven appearances in 2016/17 meant Clyne has been well established under Klopp. But between May and August, things would change dramatically for the ex-Southampton man.
As Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier provided that the competition on the domestic front, on the right side of the defense, a withdrawal of England to mid-June friendly with France would be the sign of his last participation in a Three Lions squad to this day.
“We will be without Nathaniel Clyne,” said Gareth Southgate. “He was carrying an injury and that is why we have named the three backs, we thought this would be a problem. ”
The following month, Clyne has played the second half of Liverpool’ s first friendly of the summer against Tranmere Rovers, but would be to the left of the Far East tour due to an injury.
It was later revealed by Klopp that the defender would be set for a spell on the side lines.
“The reality is that we are looking at some time before he is back,” said Klopp after Clyne has been omitted from the club to the Champions League group stage of the team.
In his absence, a teenager by the name of Trent Alexander-Arnold would cement his place. An arching free-kick in the Hoffeheim increased the young’s gifts as Clyne sitting outside.
Liverpool had a player on their hands in Alexander Arnold and Clyne’s injury woes only made the task of regaining his place more difficult. It would be too tough a combination to overcome for the London.
After 93 appearances in his first two seasons at Anfield, Clyne has made a paltry 10 since. None of the three has come of this campaign.
After the flight to a pre-season tour of the united States in 2018, Clyne was allowed to leave early to attend the birth of his son, before a meeting with his teammates in France shortly after.
“We exchanged messages and I’ve seen pictures,” said Klopp, in the united states. “A little Clyney! The baby will keep him busy for a few days and he will train again, all good. ”
But if July 2018 was happy for Clyne and his family, later in the year would be the latest setback to its plans to fight to reclaim his place in the Liverpool team.
A lesion of the anterior cruciate ligament, sustained in a friendly with Borussia Dortmund, in South Bend, would be terminal for his flat-lining hope of reviving his Anfield tenure.
Clyne will never play again for the Reds, despite the physical recovery earlier this year.
With Adam Lallana writing a short extension of the term of his contract to see him play for the rest of the Premier League season, Clyne had not had the same luck.

He will leave the club for free this month at the age of 29 years, ready to start a new chapter of his career.
To paraphrase the oldest cliché, Clyne to Liverpool career has been a tale of two halves.
But it will be on the lookout for a new club this summer as a free agent, with the best part of a decade of experience as a Premier player in the League behind him.
At a time when clubs are cutting the cloth accordingly, he may find himself the object of much attention.
