Local elections in France: Green wave as environmentalists win the main French cities, according to exit polls


A green wave swept across France on Sunday as environmental parties took control of a group of big cities like Marseille, Lyon, Strasbourg and Bordeaux, according to estimates by Ipsos and its partners.In Paris, socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo – approved by the Greens – was re-elected with 48% of the vote, according to estimates.

As the Europe Ecology-The Greens party carries its unprecedented triumph, it has performed in the midst of a record 59% abstention rate across the country. The first round of elections was held in March, just before the country blocked COVID-19.

The government was heavily criticized for maintaining the vote.

More than three months later, voters were greeted by officials wearing plastic visors to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the country still facing an epidemic. Some workers were protected by plexiglass.

Voters wore masks, brought their own pens, and waited in socially distant queues to enter schools and town halls to vote.
