Former Reds boss delighted to see coach following in Anfield’s footsteps touching distance from first crown in 30 years
Rather than wallowing in the pain of this setback, Jurgen Klopp’s team responded in style by winning a Champions League crown that opened the floodgates to Anfield.
Only two victories are needed for a record outfit when football resumes in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic to get hold of another piece of silverware, with Houllier delighted for a club he once pushed to compete for major honors but could not overcome a Premier League Line.
The former Reds boss said The mirror: “Liverpool’s DNA is silverware. To get the title, it’s a special reward for everyone.
“It’s been a long wait of 30 years. It’s a title that rewards fans for their loyalty and what they’ve experienced.
“It rewards all Liverpool supporters around the world. It’s a title that rewards players and their staff.
“Not only will they win it, but they will do it in style with a 25-point lead so far, which has never been seen before.
“In my day, we were fortunate to have six trophies.
“But Jurgen Klopp won the Champions League last season, then the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and now that. It’s just a shame for me, Liverpool fans won’t be able to experience it at Anfield.
“The fans, I hope, will be disciplined enough to wait for better times to celebrate the title. I hope to be there too, but we don’t know yet when they will be crowned. ”
Liverpool have seen key men on and off the field making a significant contribution to their recent successes, but Houllier believes that two players in particular stand out from the crowd – Klopp having found significant value in the transfer market.
“He bought two players who made a huge difference – [Virgil] van Dijk and Alisson, ”added the Frenchman.
“He spotted the team’s weak spots and if you look at the results since Van Dijk and Alisson have been there, it’s phenomenal.
“Even last year, I would say they almost also deserved to win the title. They lost in 38 games and collected 97 points.

“It was just because Manchester City was also exceptional and still had a point.
“We have to pay tribute, which Jurgen did, to Manchester City which was phenomenal. City also won the title the previous year with 100 points.
“Then the next season to be 98 is great and you have to recognize it. “
