Leicester has never won the FA Cup, has been beaten by today’s Chelsea opponents in their last two quarter-final matches, while Brendan Rodgers has yet to record a management win over the club where he started his career as a youth coach.

The omens are not good for Leicester then, but it is a club with a modern history of upsetting the odds and usurping more established names. Nor should we forget that Leicester is one place above Chelsea in the league, even if the gap between third and fourth is now reduced to one point.

At the start of the season, Rodgers and his team expected nine months of blood, toil, tears and sweat to qualify for the Champions League. In fact, Leicester had it in the bag for Christmas.

Lost on an island in third position for months, Leicester seems to have lost its advantage. They are 15th on the 10-game table and risk throwing what was at one point a 14-point cushion in the top four.

Chelsea seem to have a more positive energy right now, and it’s worth recognizing the work accomplished by Frank Lampard. Many predicted a difficult season for the inexperienced coach, but he displayed an attractive attacking style and Chelsea may well finish better than the rest behind Liverpool and Manchester City. Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech have been secured for next season and are ready to challenge.

Their 2-1 victory over City saw the crown officially pass to Liverpool, but attention is now turning to the FA Cup and the chance for Lampard to win his first major trophy as manager. The Chelsea manager chose Christian Pulisic for his praise after his goal against City.

“I think he can be a very big player, because he broke through at such a young age in Germany and made a big step, expectations are obviously increasing, but you have to keep the age in consideration Said Lampard.

“There is no doubt about his quality, we can see it and he is very eager to improve. He is particularly hungry by the minute because he missed a little time with an injury.

“If he looks at the players around him who have made this kind of jump, he has the ability, like Raheem Sterling, to produce numbers from large areas, like [Mo] Salah and [Sadio] Mane. He understands the work that needs to be done to get there. He definitely has the talent, he has to get to this level.

“I’m glad to have him up to the minute, he works hard every day, he has to aim as high as possible. ”
