Kanye West has donated $ 2 million to support the families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, a West representative told CNN.
The donation includes funding legal fees for the families of Arbery and Taylor, as well as for businesses owned by black people in crisis in his native Chicago and other cities.
The West official said he had a 529 education plan to fully cover the tuition fees for George Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter Gianna Floyd.
West’s donation comes after mass protests across the country after the deaths. Many voices in entertainment call for an end to systematic racism, police brutality and the actions of political leaders.
Three Minneapolis police arrested on Floyd’s death make their first court appearance Thursday afternoon, as the Floyd family organizes the first of several memorial services planned.
Derek Chauvin, the officer who grounded Floyd by the neck for nearly 9 minutes, was arrested last week and charged with third degree murder and second degree manslaughter. Prosecutors charged him on Wednesday with a more serious second degree murder charge.
Arbery, a black man, was shot and killed while jogging just outside Brunswick, Georgia on February 23. Three white men were arrested when he died.
Taylor was an EMT who was shot at least eight times in March when three officers broke into his Kentucky apartment. The FBI has opened an investigation into his death.
