Activists argue that McDonald’s should never have been allowed to open a branch at the wheel near barnwell Road and in the middle of a residential area of great deprivation.
They say that after 10 weeks of closing the restaurant, because of the coronavirus pandemic, residents from near and far really noticed the huge benefits of not being there.
Now, since it opened last week, residents claim there has been a huge increase in litter, smell, noise, and traffic congestion, which they say are unbearable.
The start of the petition to move the restaurant comes as several Cambridge City Councillors have written an open letter to McDonald’s asking them to take over the waste and traffic causes restaurant on Newmarket Road.
If the problems persist, councillors say, the drive-thru should close permanently until the problem is resolved.
But residents want more action, and they want McDonald’s to move, not just closed.
To date, the petition has garnered more than 840 signatures since it was put in place a few days ago with the aim of reaching 1,000 names on the list.

The full line of reasoning behind the petition’s creation on the change.org website reads: “McDonald’s should never have been allowed to open a branch on one of Cambridge’s busiest and most dangerous roundabouts and in the middle of a very poor residential area.
“Nearly ten weeks of the place being closed residents near – away have really noticed the huge benefits of not being there.
“Now it has reopened the litter box, the smell, the noise, traffic congestion and sometimes blocked traffic are absolutely unbearable and make the lives of residents very unpleasant, not only those who live very close either, people are struggling to get into the estate — have actually been diverted from McDonalds staff trying to direct traffic.
“You have the nhs kidney dialysis unit at the bottom of Wadloes Road – ambulances are up and down this road every day and they really struggle at times to even reach Wadloes Road.
“Parents take their children to school and sometimes have trouble crossing safely when customers are queuing up to get in and out by car.
“We are also on a city bus line, the buses have a difficult real time in both directions.
”is the only McDonald’s drive across in the UK which is on a residential estate. All other branches are on an industrial area.
“Bedding is a huge problem throughout the Barnwell/Abbey area, although they have a litter patrol, which is often very insufficient for the amount of people who simply drop off their food waste and packaging.
“E know that a lot of people love a McDonald’s, but I think everyone would agree that relocating it is not only the best thing for this area, it is also in the best interest of its customers too.
“I know it won’t be an easy process, because it’s Cambridge City, Cambridge County and South Cambs Council that needs to work together, but I hope that if they see how much their constituents feel about it, they can do it. So let’s show them how strong we feel…… »
