How Solskjaer is “take it or leave it” position to play on Angel Gomes tonight?

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set out to the Angel Gomes situation as a matter of fact, in his pre-match press conference. However, his decision this evening on the young striker is far from clear.

To summarize, Solskjaer told the club’s website of United have made a new contract offer from Gomes, and I hope that he will sign.

But it also alludes to a ruthless side, showing that if Gomes, ultimately, wants to move on, and then United also.

Solskjaer said: “the Angel is a top, top kid who we had at the club for may years.

“We have offered him a deal, I hope he takes it. If not, I wish him all the best. Hopefully, from what I understand, it is not too far away, so if not, we wish him all the best.”

Will Gomes make the 20-man squad?

Solskjaer has included Gomes in each team’s first training session since the restart, and now, he has publicly shown once again that he wants Gomes to stay.

The big question is whether Solskjaer will be back including Gomes in the 20-man squad to face Spurs this evening.

Earlier this week, we have had a go at predicting the team, and Gomes was not among our selection of products of substitution. It is very competitive, and it may need to wait for injuries to work his way to the top.

At the same time, this will not be exactly convince him to re-sign, if he can not even make a nine-man substitutes bench.

Solskjaer may feel that he has himself backed into a corner a little, and should include Gomes, with an eye on persuading him to renew his contract.

This may seem counter-productive to ask him to sign it, and then let him out of the team 24 hours later.

However, Solskjaer has shown this season that he will not be influenced by that, and has not given Gomes a lot of first team opportunities. He has only 19 minutes of Premier League action, which is really annoying considering Jesse Lingard has accumulated more than 1,300 minutes, and Andreas Pereira even more.

The way Solskjaer has spoken, with his matter of fact tone, made it sound as if Gomes will have to earn his place and be ready to do so. Take it or leave it.

It is useful to recall at what point the 19-year-old danced through the Tottenham defence to score a pre-season winner last July.

He came on the bench then, and it is possible that nearly a year, Solskjaer becomes bold and asks him to try and repeat his moment of magic in a game that counts.
