This is a developing story. The Times has received images from the body camera and police dashcam that we are analyzing which will add to the timeline below.
The Atlanta Police Department said Sunday morning that an officer had been fired for shooting Rayshard Brooks, 27, at a restaurant in Wendy’s. Officer Garrett Rolfe, who has worked with the department since 2013, fired three times with his handgun as he chased after Mr. Brooks, who, according to authorities, had seized a Taser from an officer and the had fired while running. Another officer on the scene, Devin Brosnan, who has been serving for less than two years, has been placed on an administrative mission.
The Times analyzed eyewitness videos and images from security cameras of the events to determine what happened in the minutes before Mr. Brooks’ death. We synchronized the footage to pinpoint when Agent Rolfe fired his gun, and we looked at other details of the shooting released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Here is a detailed breakdown of the events:
AT 10.33 p.m. Friday, police were called to Wendy’s restaurant at 125 University Avenue in south Atlanta. Brooks fell asleep in his vehicle, which was parked in the car, forcing other customers to bypass it, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.
