Hackers have attempted to access sensitive data related to the coronavirus response in the UK, including the work the country has done to develop a vaccine. The hacking attempts weren’t too sophisticated. In most cases, hackers have attempted to phish people with deceptive links and take advantage of weak passwords. However, they were serious enough that the agency’s cybersecurity arm, the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), worked with hospitals and research labs to protect them. The agency also helped the NHS make its contact search application “as secure as possible”.
While we are generally used to seeing hackers doing their best to disrupt elections, it is easy to imagine why they would also be interested in the efforts of a country’s coronaviruses. There is much to be gained both financially and politically for any power that can advance in the vaccine race.
