The US prosecutor in the New York Southern District is fighting with the Department of Justice for his work.

Geoffrey Berman oversaw the prosecution of President Trump’s associates, including former Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen. He also filed a lawsuit against the grand jury against the associates of the president’s current personal lawyer, Rudolf Giuliani.

Attorney General William Barr, in a statement released Friday evening, said that Berman “resigned” and that the president appointed Jay Clayton, president of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to succeed Berman.

Shortly after, Geoffrey Berman canceled his own announcement, denying Barr’s statement.

“I learned in a press release from the Attorney General this evening that I was resigning as the United States attorney,” said Berman. “I have not resigned and I do not intend to resign from my position, to which I have been appointed by the judges of the United States District Court for the southern district of New York. I will resign when a candidate appointed by the president is confirmed by the Senate. “
