The US prosecutor in the New York Southern District is fighting with the Department of Justice for his work.
Geoffrey Berman oversaw the prosecution of President Trump’s associates, including former Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen. He also filed a lawsuit against the grand jury against the associates of the president’s current personal lawyer, Rudolf Giuliani.
Attorney General William Barr, in a statement released Friday evening, said that Berman “resigned” and that the president appointed Jay Clayton, president of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to succeed Berman.
Shortly after, Geoffrey Berman canceled his own announcement, denying Barr’s statement.
“I learned in a press release from the Attorney General this evening that I was resigning as the United States attorney,” said Berman. “I have not resigned and I do not intend to resign from my position, to which I have been appointed by the judges of the United States District Court for the southern district of New York. I will resign when a candidate appointed by the president is confirmed by the Senate. “
“Until then, our investigations will proceed without delay or interruption. ”
As Berman postpones his refusal to leave, Attorney General Barr’s press release said President Trump has already appointed an interim replacement for Berman. Barr said that effective July 3, Craig Carpenito, the current US attorney for the district of New Jersey, will take over until Clayton is confirmed.
Barr thanked Berman for his service, adding, “With tenacity and common sense, Geoff has done a great job in running one of the largest American law firms in our country, achieving many successes in civil and criminal cases. consistent. ”
Under Berman’s supervision, his office has launched proceedings against multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein on federal charges of sex trafficking. Berman later charged two correctional officers who were supposed to keep Epstein for neglect after Epstein’s apparent suicide in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.
Berman’s team also aggressively investigated and prosecuted Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal lawyer and repairman. Cohen eventually pleaded guilty to financial crimes, lying to Congress and campaign finance crimes.
Under oath, Cohen implicated Trump in payments made to two women before the 2016 election to keep them informed of the matters they said they had with Trump.
Berman has released a grand jury indictment against Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, two men associated with Rudy Giuliani. The two pleaded “not guilty” of setting up a front company to hide the foreign supply of a $ 325,000 donation to a superPAC engaged in the re-election of President Trump. The two are also said to have helped Giuliani in his efforts to unearth the filth of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter in Ukraine.
And Berman’s office has investigated the business dealings of Giuliani himself, but no charges have been laid against him.
