French support for Libyan Haftar finally comes home

FRance’s Libyan politics are finally under internal scrutiny. For years, Paris played a vital role in the rise of warlord Khalifa Haftar by providing him with a veneer of respectability as well as diplomatic coverage.

But a tipping point seems to have been reached after Haftar’s disastrous defeat in western Libya. After having swallowed the line of France according to which Paris fought against “terrorism” by supporting the strong man Haftar against the “Islamists” in Tripoli, some within the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and security apparatuses would start to work back.

A senior official familiar with French policy in Libya, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged “frustration” within the French establishment over the ongoing debacle.
