France reports over 1,500 new Covid-19 cases, a first since late May


PARIS: France on Friday reported more than 1,500 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, a peak not seen since May 30, while the number of additional deaths linked to the virus increased from the highest level in three days.

French health officials said in a statement that the total number of newly confirmed infections had increased by 1,588, which is well above the daily average of 498 observed in the past seven days and the daily average of 430 since the beginning of June.The number of people who died from the disease increased from 26 to 29,778, up from 21 Thursday and 11 Wednesday and an average of 19 in the past seven days.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 caused by the virus has dropped from 255 to 8,886, the first time this total has been below the 9,000 threshold in over three months.

People in intensive care fell from 17 to 634. Both figures have been on a downward trend for at least 10 weeks.
