France has committed to invest 1.5 billion euros (£ 1.3 billion) to launch its first carbon neutral aircraft by 2035.The project is part of a massive € 15 billion (£ 13.4 billion) bailout for the country’s aviation industry.

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire has declared a “state of emergency” to save the aviation industry so that it can be more competitive.

He added: “We must at all costs avoid a dropout in our industry. We want to accelerate the decarbonization of the aeronautical sector and manufacture a carbon neutral aircraft in 2035. ”

The Civil Aviation Research Council will receive funding to develop new technologies that could allow the launch of a low-carbon aircraft.
