France awards medals Estonian troops for the service in Mali | News


The medals have been awarded to 48 members of the Estonian Defense Forces (EDF) in the French Defence Attache Lieutenant Colonel Frank Piffer and the Lieutenant Colonel Mathieu Courtaban, at the head of the French contingent currently at the service of the Baltic Air Policing mission from Ämari Air Base.The members of the FED have served in the framework of Operation Barkhane to a French base located in the city of Gao since 2018.

In addition to foot and armored patrols in the regions of Gao and its surroundings, Estonian troops in Mali are also in charge of managing the database of entries and lookout posts, and to carry out the tasks of a rapid response unit.

Operation Barkhane is a French-led anti-insurgent mission in the Sahel region, whose objective is to support Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad in the fight against Islamic terrorism and radical as well as the fight against illegal migration and trafficking in human beings.
