Alabama hit a home run on the recruiting trail on Friday, hitting a five-star offensive tackle JC Latham on Ohio State and LSU. The IMG Academy product from Bradenton, Florida announced their decision to ride the tide on Twitter.
The nation’s No. 3 overall ranking, according to the Top247 ranking, is Alabama’s seventh entry in the 2021 class and the first five star to board. Not only is he the first five star, but Latham is also the first offensive line engagement in the class, a cycle where position is considered to be in great need with NFL draft losses expected to ensue after the season 2020.
Running backs trainer Charles huff is Latham’s main recruiter.
At 6 feet 6 inches and 305 pounds, Latham is ranked No. 5 in attacking tackle and No. 17 in the country’s overall ranking, according to the industry’s 247Sports composite ranking.
Here is the evaluation of 247Sports on the native of Wisconsin, via Charles Power of 247Sports:
“Has a large square frame of exceptional length. Has long arms and large hands in addition to his considerable stature and has added mass in the past year as he enters his senior season. Is ready for use in terms of size and mass with little weight. Has a basketball background and has shown a good change of direction in the settings of the combine. Initially a defensive lineman, Latham became an attacking tackle, transitioning after his transfer to IMG. Good performance against a high level competition occupying the position of left tackle as a junior in 2019. Potential flashes to become a dominant run blocker. Combines its supreme length with functional motor skills and athleticism, as evidenced by its ability to reach the second level. Demonstrates advanced flexibility and plays with a high level of pad, maintaining leverage against opposing defensive linemen. Embraces physics and works to complete blocks once tapped. Also has the framework to develop into a strong pass blocker with length and responsive speed in his passing game. Shot in some good camp performances against top runners in early 2020 before the Coronavirus stopped. Still relatively technically green with limited experience as a full-time offensive lineman – which also indicates a considerable advantage. Will have to continue to hone his technique as he gains more key representatives in the game. Projects as a multi-year starter at Power 5 level with the advantage of becoming a first round selection of the NFL. “
Latham joins a class in Alabama that includes wide four-star receivers Jacorey Brooks and Agiye Hall, four-star linebackers Ian Jackson and Deontae Lawson, four-star security Kaine williamsand a three-star defensive tackle Anquin Barnes. With today’s addition, the tide is rising to # 28 in the country, according to the industry’s 247Sports composite team recruiting ranking.
