Anthony Joshua was “upset” by charges after trying to “raise his community” in a speech at a Black Lives Matter march, said promoter Eddie Hearn.

The unified British heavyweight champion went on social media to suggest that the footage of his speech had been edited out of context after attending the event in his hometown of Watford on Saturday.

Hearn believes Joshua’s words were misinterpreted and revealed how the 30-year-old intends to make a significant investment in a local business.

“He read someone’s speech, which he might have phrased differently, if he had read it himself,” said Hearn. Sky Sports News.

“People want to interpret the words of this in different ways. I saw strange thoughts about what it was meant to mean.

“These are not his words, but he also uttered some of his own words, which were to elevate his community, to invest in his community, which is Watford, and he has a seven-digit investment which he puts in the his. soon to give people more opportunities.

“He said the gang culture is dead, he talked about making sure that all the rallies and demonstrations were peaceful. There were so many positive things that came out of what he said.

“I have known Anthony Joshua for eight years. I know him backwards. It hurts when some of the charges have stolen. ”

In a statement on social media, Joshua wrote, “If you watch the entire video, the speech was broadcast so that someone read and I took the initiative.

“I have spoken personally about the background of the Watford community, the ideas of personally investing ourselves in seven figures to create unity and opportunity and bring about change in the African / Caribbean community.

“Shops are not the problem here.

” Before talking [negatively] you better boycott racism.

“I said what I said and I’m going to take action to make a difference. ”

Hearn says he is proud of Joshua for promoting debate after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last month.

“I spoke to him for an hour this morning,” said Hearn. “He is quite upset.

“I think what is important for him is that there are conversations and debates, and that there is education, and that there is learning about situations, because I think too many of us have been guilty in the past of not speaking up or not doing enough, and it’s sad that it took something like this to start so many people.

“So many companies are also starting to realize that we need to make changes, because racism is rampant across the country. It is there now and it is historic, and it must change. I think the conversation is good, and I’m very proud of Anthony for the way he talks and trying to promote what he has always tried to promote, which is to raise people, to motivate them, to do better, be better and be better.

“There are all these clips circulating on the Internet. Go back and watch the clip. He clearly states: “I will read this speech here”, by the gentleman who wrote it, and perhaps he would have phrased it differently It was not a speech on white businesses and white shops, but people are very quick to criticize or give feedback on different things.

I think one of the positive aspects of his appearance is the conversation, the talking points, the change and it is very important to him and it should be important to all of us.

Eddie Hearn

“Probably in hindsight, he shouldn’t have read someone else’s speech, but he was there trying to join a rally to try to elevate the community, and let’s look at the positives of why he was there, what he represented and what he is trying to give back to the community.

“He is a good individual, with good character, a good person, who wants to change the world for the better. I think one of the positive things that came out of his appearance was the conversation, the talking points, the change and it is very important to him and it should be important to all of us. ”
