In response, city leaders proposed a coordinated plan to apply a mandatory face mask policy for most of the GTHA. The mayors of Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon announced measures similar to those of Toronto.

“We know that we are at a critical time in the fight against COVID-19 and that we must do everything we can to avoid the flare-ups that we have seen elsewhere,” said Tory. “It only makes sense to have a coordinated approach.”

The facial masks order would apply to more than 4.3 million people in the Toronto and Peel regions, of which 2.93 million people are affected in the capital of Ontario.

More than 14,000 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Toronto, while almost 35,000 people in the province tested positive since the virus first came to Canada.

Kingston, a city east of Toronto, on Friday made it mandatory to wear a face mask in indoor public spaces after an epidemic in which five people tested positive for COVID-19 in a nail salon.
