With Trump in mind, coronavirus failures in America are revealed by a record increase in new infections
Five months after the first detection of the new coronavirus in the United States, a record outbreak of new cases is the most obvious sign of the country’s historic failure to control the virus – revealing a governance crisis extending from the oval office to the state capitals to city councils.
President Trump – who has repeatedly downplayed the virus, sidelined experts and deceived Americans about its dangers and potential remedies – now finds his presidency upset by an inability to guide the country through its worst calamity of public health for a century. The dysfunction that has long characterized Trump’s White House was particularly ill-suited to a viral epidemic that requires precision, focus and consistent leadership, according to public health experts, government officials and legislators from both sides.
