Vice President Pence on Sunday implored Americans to wear face masks, social distancing and stay away from the elderly to protect them amid a new spike in coronavirus infections, while the United States has exceeded 2.5 million confirmed cases.
At an event in Dallas, Pence praised Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) for “decisive action” in reopening the state’s economy in early May. But while state hospitals are experiencing a surge in patients amid soaring infection rates, Pence praised Abbott for reducing certain reopening measures, including ordering the closure of bars and restaurants to reduce the occupation.
The virus has killed more than 123,000 people in the United States, and American cases represent by far the largest share of the workload in the world. In Texas, coronavirus hospitalizations hit a record for the 16th consecutive day on Saturday, with 5,523 patients treated.
