Florida and Texas announced Wednesday they had recorded more than 5 000 new cases Covid-19 the previous day, a new record daily. California has reported more than 7,000 cases, deleting a record high reached the previous day.
In Texas, if the current trajectory continues, Houston could be the city most affected the United States, with numbers rivaling those of Brazil. The number of infection also increases in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, said Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine.
“The larger metropolitan areas seem to be increasing very rapidly and some models are on the verge of being apocalyptic,” said Hotez, Anderson Cooper of CNN.
Hotez is also professor of pediatrics and of molecular virology and microbiology, and is working on a potential vaccine Covid-19.
The governors are calling for residents
Florida, Texas and California account for 27.4% of the 328 million people living in the United States, according to the latest estimates from the US Census Bureau.
And while some politicians say that the higher number of infections is due to increased testing, this is not the case, said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy at the University of Minnesota.
While the new cases and hospitalizations skyrocket, the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, has urged people to stay home.
“Because the spread is so endemic at this time, there was never a reason for you having to leave your house,” said Abbott to the affiliate of CNN, KBTX. “At least you don’t need to go out, the safest place for you is in you. ”
Officials have encouraged the mask-wearing and social distancing in places like bars, which are often overcrowded. Other actions of the State may be announced if the virus continues to spread at this rate, said Abbott.
In the state the most populous in the country, the governor-Gavin Newsom pleaded with Californians to think about other people wearing masks, keeping a safe distance, and washing hands regularly.
He told the people to “love your neighbors, like you, if you please”, and urged more young people to be especially careful.
“Pay attention to mom and dad, and pay attention to your mother-in-law, your father-in-law, your grandparents and your parents,” he said.
The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, attributed the increase to more testing, but others say that the transmission community plays a key role in the reopening of the State. The mayor of Miami Francis Suarez, said he will ask the city commission to impose a civil fine of up to $ 250 for those who do not wear mask in public.
Miami has implemented an order requiring masks or masks in public this week.
“Go out in public without a mask, it is like driving in a state of intoxication,” said Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a cardiologist and professor of medicine at the George Washington University. “If you don’t get hurt. You could kill someone else. “
Some States extend their restrictions
Arizona is also experiencing the largest number of new cases per capita of all the States of the country. There has been more new cases per capita than any State outside of New York or New Jersey, according to an analysis of CNN data from the Johns Hopkins University.
The State has added about 2,700 new cases per day during the seven days that ended Tuesday. Adjusted for population, this represents approximately 38 new cases per 100 000 people per day.
In Louisiana, the governor, John Bel Edwards said he planned to publish a new proclamation Thursday extending the restrictions of phase 2 under the current order for 28 more days.
“In simple terms, we are headed in the wrong direction. We have more cases than we can justify simply by the fact that they are doing more tests, ” said Edwards.
Cases are rising in at least 26 States
At least 26 States will see an increase in the number of cases compared to the previous week, according to data from the Johns Hopkins University. These States are Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
In recent days, the leaders of cities and States have announced that the cases seem to be moving toward younger groups. They have highlighted cases including parties and bars as a source of clusters recent.
Texas has temporarily suspended the liquor licence for at least 12 bars that have violated the protocols on the coronavirus.
