Connor McDavid rookie of the card game to beat the record, and sell for over $70K at auction


The most famous member of the current Edmonton Oilers of the range is about to explode past an office record that he already holds the most expensive modern hockey card.A rookie trading card featuring Connor McDavid is up for auction and has already received an offer of more than 70 000 $USD (more than 95 000 $CAD).

The card that rakes in the high price tag is a 2015-16 Upper Deck The Cup Connor McDavid Rookie Auto Patch card.

In fact, this is the third time that a McDavid card of the record: a previous rookie card from the same series featuring the player holding the modern trend of recording. It sold for $55,655 USD in May 2018. Prior to this, another McDavid card had held the record following a sale in 2017.

Modern collectible cards are not considered to be any card printed after 1986.

The big pull for this high price is the card number. The card is numbered 97, which means that it is 97 of 100 total number of cards from this particular Cup series.

“In the collecting world, there are many people who want to possess the jersey number of the player on the map,” said Wayne Wagner, owner of Wayne’s Sports Cards in Edmonton.

“There is a lot of excitement behind rookies, no question,” he said. “There is always a great desire to possess cards, rookie and patch autograph.”

The patch autograph means that a tiny part of McDavid’s actual jersey is part of the thick-stock card. Wagner said the color of the jersey the patch also makes a big difference with the driving value.

Jordan Gilroy, director of acquisitions at Lelands auctions, said he believes that this card is really a rarity.

“For modern cards, there’s not a lot of Connor McDavid cards like this out there,” he said. “There are only 99 of these rookie patch autographs there… they rarely show up in auctions.

“This is his true rookie patch autograph.”

Wagner said McDavid cards are selling for more and more because of the excitement and attention around the NHL players, all the fans from all over the world.

“You’re talking about an important player,” said ashley.

“We had our Gretzkys, we had our Lindros’… Connor McDavid is the next one.”

Wagner said another card of the same series, but not 97, has already been found in a game sold in his shop.

The map that is currently in the auction was found at the end of 2019 in the framework of a “case break” by the group Jaspy, where several people can buy a place to receive a portion of a case of cards to offset the initial investment.

The auction is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m., The current high bid is $70,254 USD, while Gilroy has said he believes that the number could reach 100,000 us $on Friday.
