Convicted pedophile Christian Brueckner “lost him” when staff at a newsstand he ran in northern Germany began to discuss the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Brueckner ran the small store selling drinks and snacks in the northern German city of Braunschweig between 2012 and 2014.
Lenta Johlitz, 34, worked for him at the corner store and, remembering the exchange, she told the German newspaper Bild: “Once he totally lost it when we sat down with friends and had a conversation about the Maddie affair. He wanted us to stop talking about it. He shouted, “The child is dead now and that’s it.” “

His story emerged when a former caretaker described how Brueckner would shower the kids with toys and teddy bears as they headed to a school barely 100 yards from the kiosk.
Peter Erdmann, 64, who worked at the Grundschule Hohsteig, a primary school for about 300 children, said: “The children came to school with ponies and teddy bears. I asked them where they came from and they said to me: “Christian at the kiosk gave it to us”.
“He used to give gifts to the kids when they walked by the kiosk in the morning. “
Erdmann, who worked at the school between 1999 and 2016, added: “At the time, I didn’t think about it. I used to go see Christian at the kiosk, and he always seemed friendly to me.
“I even asked him if he offered gifts to the children and he told me that he had a small full box in the kiosk.
“It’s turning my stomach now to think about her intentions and I wish I had talked about what was going on with my bosses at the time. “
Erdmann said he now wants to speak to the police, adding, “I regret that I was not more suspicious at the time. “

A former girlfriend of Brueckner claimed that he regularly mistreated and strangled her.
The claim was recalled by Norbert M – a man who met Brueckner in 2012 and moved into his apartment adjoining the kiosk. “She was about 17 years old and was blonde. She was a very small, puny woman.
“She told me that Brueckner hit and strangled her. She told me so herself. I saw strangling marks on his neck. “
Norbert, who asked not to be named in full, said Brueckner would allow nine-year-olds to work for him until the store. He also claimed that Brueckner allowed his two dogs to die by leaving them inside the kiosk for six weeks while on vacation in Portugal.
