The 24-year-old, along with three other black men and a Métis woman, was eating at one of the fast-casual chain’s stores in Florence, he said in an Instagram video posted on Thursday.
Towards the end of their meal, Leonard said in the video, a manager approached the group “with a terrible attitude” to ask if there was a problem. The manager said that a white client said that Leonard and his group “verbally abused him” and “told him about the garbage.”
“It was basically a lie,” said Leonard. “We were basically expelled from Chipotle because of this. ”
Leonard said the manager told him he would call the police in his group.
“We have a zero tolerance policy for any form of discrimination,” said Niccol. “I have spoken personally with Darius and I am determined to ensure that appropriate action is taken after the investigation is completed. ”
The case emerged as racism became a flashpoint in the United States after the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted this month that the league should have listened to players earlier on issues of racism, and the league has pledged $ 250 million over the next decade to help fight systematic racism.
“Darius’ experience demonstrates the struggle that so many black Americans and people of color face every day,” the Colts said in a statement on Thursday, according to The Indianapolis Star. “It also shows why we need serious action from our heads of government, law enforcement, business and ordinary Americans to end systemic racism and injustice and to continue this important dialogue on how to inspire positive change in our country. ”
CNN contacted Leonard and his team.
As the man and his group left the restaurant, the man who complained laughed at them, he said in his video.
“You can’t even like to eat anymore,” said Leonard. “It’s the privilege of whites we’re talking about. There is no Black (who) can sit there and eat peacefully without being racially profiled …
“And you all wonder why all the protests and all these things are happening right now. We have had enough. We have had enough. And all of you whites don’t understand what we’re going through. It’s very frustrating, very frustrating. And you don’t feel our damned pain. ”
