Canada Resumes Temporary Visa and AVE Processing

Canada will resume processing online temporary resident visa (VRT) applications as well as electronic travel authorization (AVE) applications on June 9.Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the update on its website.

IRCC has said it will resume processing VRT online “as much as possible”. Requests will be prioritized for people who are currently eligible to travel based on current travel restrictions.

VRT requests submitted prior to travel restrictions will not be prioritized unless requesters contact IRCC at the following email address.

When contacting IRCC, these individuals must explain how they are exempt from travel restrictions, why they are traveling to Canada for essential purposes, and also provide IRCC with acceptable documentation.

In addition, IRCC will resume manual processing of eTA applications which will be abandoned for examination by immigration officers, also “to the extent possible”.

IRCC notes that this is to help it cope with the expected increase in requests once the travel restrictions are lifted.

IRCC will expedite the processing of eTA applications which will be abandoned for manual review as long as the applicant also meets the criteria for exemption from current travel restrictions.

They should also identify themselves and submit documentation using the IRCC web form.

Due to the global coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), IRCC had accepted requests for VRT and AVE, but was temporarily unable to process them. This new announcement provides even more indications that IRCC is seeking to standardize the processing of requests to the best of its ability.
