OTTAWA – Transport Minister Marc Garneau has said Canada is anxious for Iran to follow up on a new promise to send the black boxes of the Ukrainian airliner shot down in France.

After more than two months of refusing to abandon the recorders, Farhad Parvaresh, Iranian delegate to the International Civil Aviation Organization, told ICAO on March 11 that flight data and recorders cockpit voices would be sent to Ukrainian aviation investigators within 14 days.

If Ukraine was unable to download the material, it would then be handed over to the French Bureau of Investigation and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety, which is one of the best in the world to investigate plane crashes.

More than 90 days later, the boxes remain in Iran, and Parvaresh tells The Canadian Press that Iran will now bypass Ukraine and send them directly to France as soon as all the parties who want to be there when they are downloaded can travel.
