As of Friday evening, Brazil became the second country in the world to surpass 1 million cases of coronavirus, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The nation is on track to provide shade in the US for most coronavirus deaths worldwide by the end of July, according to a model.The United States, which currently has the highest number of cases and deaths, currently has more than 2.2 million cases and more than 119,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University. Brazil is approaching 1.1 million cases and have just under 49,000 deaths.

Brazil reported a record 54,771 new cases on Friday, according to Reuters, and the country is expected to top 50,000 deaths over the weekend. The country’s health ministry said the spike occurred because the numbers were underreported on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), which is part of the University of Washington School of Medicine, has predicted that Brazil’s death toll will exceed that of the United States in July.
