Match report: Aston Villa 0-1 Wolves
Nuno speaks: “I think we have performed well in terms of organization in terms of approach to the game,” he told BT Sport. “But we did not settle very well. Then we started to better control and create opportunities. It’s a good team with very talented players. Today was about controlling the game because Villa had four midfielders. We had to try to open them and take possession in large areas. I am very happy with Leander because he is a very hard worker. “
Full time: Aston Villa 0-1 Wolves
90 + 4 min: Now Traore concedes another free kick, with a little kick to Mings at the bottom of half of the Villa. Moments later, he commits another foul, giving Villa a free kick just inside his half. Nyland’s delivery to the Wolves penalty area is atrocious.
90 + 3 min: Traoré loses the ball to Douglas Luiz, allowing Villa to break the field. They lose the position again, when Luiz commits a foul.
90 + 2 min: We are two minutes in five hours overtime. Wolves have the ball and are not inclined to give it away. They pulverize passes between them, leaving the exhausted and discouraged players of Villa chasing the shadows.
90 mins: In the last minute of normal time we will, with Villa still need an equalizer. Wolves win a large free kick on the left for a foul on Neto by Kortney Hause. They play the ball to their own goalkeeper in order to reduce the time.
89 mins: Villa continues to connect but Jonny puts the ball out of play for a throw-in while Grealish tries to pass it. He had a very calm second half, a young Jack.
88 mins: Traoré seems to descend gently on the right touchline, but still leaves Taylor and El Ghazi in his dust. But his cross is poor. Villa erases their lines.
86 mins: Mings tries to play a low ball at the feet of Samatta on the edge of the Wolves’ penalty area. It’s blocked.
85 mins: Substitution of wolves: Raul Jiminez, assist provider for Leander Dendoncker’s goal, gives way to Pedro Neto.
82 mins: Villa wins a free kick about 35 meters from the Wolves’ goal. McGinn floats the ball toward the far post, where Trezeguet, who has just returned, pushes it widely. Double substitution villa: Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet replace Keinan Davis and Marvelous Nakamba.
77 mins: Mbwana Samatta directs the ball high over the Wolves’ goal about 12 yards away, jumping under pressure to connect with a center from the right.
76 mins: A good tackle by Leander Dendoncker just inside his own penalty area. He takes out one leg with perfect timing to block the ball and prevent Grealish from doing one of his shimmering runs to the goal.
74 mins: Villa wins a wide free kick on the left. The ball has floated to the far post, where Kortney Hause directs it high and wide. The delivery was too high a mite for him and he might have been better served by trying to nod in front of the goal.
74 mins: With his back to goal, Grealish tosses the ball up after receiving a pass from Taylor. He sits beautifully for him and he turns to pull around. Its effort from the edge of the penalty area is blocked.
72 mins: Jack Grealish lost the ball in the center of the circle, Ruben Neves committing the attack but selling Traore short with a bad pass.
71 mins: Villa plays the ball along the left channel, where Willy Boly leaps to take the ball out for a throw-in.
69 mins: Traoré wins a free kick in the center circle after being struck by Douglas Luiz as he tries to get away from Villa’s man.
69 mins: There is another break for drinks and management advice.
67 mins: The ball is sent to the blender, where it hits Willy Boly’s knee and bounces on the way to Leander Dendoncker. He is somewhat taken by surprise and tries to bring the ball home to the far post, but to put it wide. It was not an easy chance, but it was still a chance.
66 mins: Traoré places the ball on the right touchline, accelerates after Makamba with alarming ease and reaches the touchline. Under pressure from Neil Taylor, he looks up and forces a corner.
64 mins: Traoré has an immediate impact, playing his part in an ultra-fast Wolves counterattack. He caught Jonny’s ball in the midfield before playing it to Jiminez, whose center in the box was delicious. He chose Jonny back to back, who prepared him for Dendoncker. He still had a lot of work to do to make room for a shot and pull the trigger. It’s a great goal and Villa finds itself in all kinds of worries.
GOAL! Aston Villa 0-1 Wolves (Dendoncker 62)
60 mins: Double substitution villa: Ahmed “Elmo” Elmohamady and John McGinn for Conor Hourihane and Ezri Konsa. Substitution of wolves: Adama Traoré for Diogo Jota.
59 mins: Aston Villa pauses on the counter, with Douglas Luiz spreading the ball right and wide at Jack Grealish. Its progress is interrupted and the wolves manage to regain their shape.
57 mins: Tyrone Mings catches the eye of his teammate Villa Neil Taylor and points to the sideline, where Adama Traore is preparing to enter. #prayforneil
56 mins: Conor Hourihane wraps a center into the Wolves’ penalty area from the right wing. It is too close to Rui Patricio and the goalkeeper gathers comfortably.
54 mins: Samatta goes to the ground on the edge of the Wolves’ penalty area, left side. There is a VAR check to see if he was pushed by – I think – Willy Boly who was scoring him tightly but no free kick or penalty is coming.
52 mins: Grealish passes the ball to the far post, where Mbwana Samatta hangs in the air beside the post to prevent him from playing. Wolves are clear.
50 mins: Raul Jiminez tries to play Leander Dendoncker behind the inside right flank, but Kortney Hause is quickly across to place the ball into the pit.
47 mins: Moutinho curves a dangerous ball into Villa’s penalty area. Neil Taylor, aware that Raul Jimenez could be hiding behind him, trained to direct the ball into a corner but withdrew at the last minute under strong instructions from his goalkeeper. Jiminez is not there and the ball widens.
Second half: Aston Villa 0-0 Wolves
46 mins: The game resumes and the wolves start. There does not seem to be a change of personnel on either side.
Half-time: Aston Villa 0-0 Wolves
The players leave for the break, the Wolves having benefited from the last 20 minutes of superiority. Diogo Jota missed the selection of their opportunities, sparing the blush of the goalkeeper Villa Orjan Nyland after accidentally dropping the ball at his feet on the edge of the penalty area.
45 + 4 min: Dioga Jota stands behind Villa’s defense, working miracles to keep the ball in play on the touchline. He is unable to stay in play, however, falling before he can get a center.
45 + 2 min: We are halfway through overtime at the end of the first half and the impasse remains unbroken. It was an entertaining first half, despite the lack of opportunity and goals. Villa dominated the first 25 minutes, but has been largely behind since the drink break. Half and two quarters, if you like.
45 mins: Villa wins a wide free kick on the left. Grealish and Hourihane try to play a two against one on the left rather than putting it in the box. Hilarity ensues and they somehow manage to concede a throw-in. It is poor – Villa wastes a lot of opportunities to put dangerous balls in the box of Wolves from set pieces.
44 mins: Jonny brilliantly succeeded in blocking a curved effort from Conor Hourihane who was headed for goal.
41 mins: Oh my! The goalkeeper of the villa Orjan Nyland is trained to throw the ball and the ball slides out of his glove and lands three or four meters at the foot of Jota. With all the time in the world to choose his place and place the ball in the corner, he decides to break the ball and send it wide. This is a serious leak for Villa.
40 mins: Jiminez takes a low shot away from Villa’s goal after being blocked when the Wolves switched play from left to right. Wolves are now dominating after a poor 25-minute opening and it seems to be a matter of timing, rather than whether they will score. Remember, they still have Adama Traore on the bench, who will no doubt be introduced after about an hour once Villa’s defense has been softened and exhausted.
38 mins: Moutinho spreads it left and wide to Jonny on the left flank and plays a one-two with Diogo Jota trying to make room for a center. Villa clear, for the moment.
37 mins: Jack Grealish catches the ball, cuts inside from the left and shoots through a thicket of legs from the edge of the Wolves’ penalty area. Rui Patricio quickly descends to save.
35 mins: Romain Saiss gets on the ground holding his ankle after being trampled by Keinan Davis, who was trying to block the Wolves’ clearance.
34 mins: Neil Taylor concedes a corner, well defending while Dendoncker tries to pass on a pass from Conor Coady in a good shooting position in the penalty area of Villa. Moutinho sends the ball to the blender, where Tyrone Mings heads off.
32 min: Free kick for Villa, wide left from deep. The ball floats to the left of the penalty area, where Kortney Hause is penalized for a foul on Matt Doherty. Villa had several free kicks in these areas and wasted them on poor deliveries.
29 mins: Jonny tries to spice up the flag from the left corner towards Jota in the Villa penalty area. Konsa blocks its delivery. Wolves have looked much livelier since the refreshment break. I’ll have a pint of everything they drink.
28 min: There is another break in the game while Villa’s Marvelous Nakamba is being treated for an injury. He looks like he injured his shoulder after a collision, but he seems to be fine.
26 mins: With Dendoncker and Jota waiting in the middle, Raul Jiminez gets a wonderful cross from the right touchline. He looks on a plate for Jota to push him home to the far post, but he can’t connect with the ball.
25 mins: The players take a break for a drink and a secondary support from their respective managers. Dean Smith of Villa will be much happier than his counterpart.
25 mins: Matt Doherty beats Taylor to the right and shoots from a ridiculously tight angle when there were options available to him in the penalty area. Large.
24 min: Grealish and Konsa combine well at the bottom right creating an overlap. The rear center sends a cross to Douglas Costa in the penalty area, but his performance is over-struck.
22 mins: Keinan Davis heads high over the bar under pressure from Conor Coady after reaching the end of a whipped center from the right. Villa has had the best of the game so far, but Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio has not been tested yet.
