Antonio Rudiger would have helped persuade Timo Werner to join Chelsea as the closest Premier League edge to a major transfer market coup.
Information on Thursday evening revealed that the RB Leipzig star had made a deal to join West London club next season in a £ 53m deal, knocking out Liverpool’s strong opponents in the landing of the 24-year-old player.
And fans believe that Rudiger, who plays alongside the striker from their country, Germany, may have contributed to the deal.
Antonio Rudiger would have played a “key role” in attracting Timo Werner to Stamford Bridge
RB Leipzig star agreed to join Chelsea for £ 53m this summer
According to Bild (via Metro), these rumors seem to be true, as the German outlet reports that Rudiger played a “key role” in convincing Werner to join Chelsea instead of Liverpool.
The publication claims that the human rights defender closely followed Werner’s decisions and often gave him rave reviews of life in West London.
Rudiger and Werner have a strong friendship, having played in the youth set up for Germany as well as having crossed together in Stuttgart.
The 24-year-old was about to join Liverpool before the radical move to the West London club
Chelsea are said to have promised to triple Werner’s current salary, making him the club’s second highest paid player on £ 200,000 a week.
He is also likely to see much more playing time at Stamford Bridge than he should have at Anfield, Roberto Firmino retaining the center-forward position for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
Werner has a £ 53 million release clause, but the Reds have been pushed back due to financial uncertainty caused by the coronavirus crisis.
Werner’s move to Stamford Bridge would be a major blow to the young team of Frank Lampard
The clause is due to be triggered on June 15 and, although Liverpool have previously been viewed as Werner’s favorite and repeated praise for Jurgen Klopp’s team, it looks set to join their Premier League rivals.
Liverpool still have room for Werner, but at the moment they are unwilling to take up the offer.
Werner’s agent Karlheinz Forster is said to have held advanced talks on Thursday and details of the deal are expected to be worked out with Chelsea by early next week.
It is understood that Jurgen Klopp made a video call to Werner a few months ago, but the encouraging noises from Merseyside have since stopped.
