Anthony Joshua joined his community of Watford in a Black Lives Matter event on Saturday despite the need for crutches to withstand an ongoing injury.

The unified heavyweight world champion marched through the streets of his hometown before speaking at a park rally where he read a poem by another resident and friend of Watford.

It was one of many BLM protests across the UK on Saturday, despite government health secretary Matt Hancock warning of the protests because of the risks to social distancing from coronaviruses.

In a speech shared via his official Instagram account, Joshua, 30, said, “We can no longer sit back and remain silent about these senseless and illegal murders and devious racism against another human being – on the basis of what ? Only their skin color.

“We have to speak out at peaceful protests – just like today, Watford, very well done.

“We must not use a demonstration for selfish motives and transform it into riot and pillage. ”

Joshua wore everything in black, including a black leather glove and a Black Lives Matter T-shirt, and was one of many who spoke at the meeting.

“The splint is a precautionary measure on the advice of physios. She will be checked by her doctors but there is no immediate concern. “
