AMC theater chain reverses policy and demands masks after drawing backlash

This week, AMC cinemas announced plans to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic – and one aspect immediately raised concerns. The company’s “AMC Safe & Clean” plan describes improved cleaning protocols and details of social distancing, but some preventive measures were missing from the list: wearing a mask.AMC initially stated that it would not require theatergoers to wear face covers, even if public health officials say this is a crucial step to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. But after receiving a backlash for the decision, AMC theaters announced on Friday that it would reverse the course and would now require all guests to wear a face mask.

In an interview with Variety on Thursday, AMC CEO and President Adam Aron explained why wearing the mask was missing from the safety precautions list. “We didn’t want to be drawn into political controversy,” said Aron. “We thought it could be counterproductive if we imposed the mask on people who firmly believe it is not necessary.
