Amazon is implementing a one-year moratorium on police use of its Rekognition artificial intelligence software amid growing reaction to the tech company’s connection to law enforcement. The company recently declared support for the Black Lives Matter movement, which advocates for police reform – using Twitter to call for an end to “unfair and brutal treatment of black people” in the United States and has put a “problem of black lives ”banner at the top of its home page. But the company has been criticized as hypocritical for selling its facial recognition software to the police.

Amazon did not say how many police use the technology, or how it is used, but marketing materials have promoted that Rekognition is used in conjunction with real-time police cameras.
