Alberta confirms 37 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday; Edmonton sees largest active numbers

Editor’s note: An earlier version of the story said 38 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on Friday. As of Friday, the exact number of new cases in Alberta is 37, changes have been made to the story to reflect the correct information.Alberta Health confirmed 37 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the number of active cases in the province to 509.

Thirty-seven people are hospitalized, including eight in intensive care. The province reported no additional deaths on Friday.

The Edmonton area has the highest number of active cases in the province, 241.

Edmonton is also facing an active epidemic at Misericordia Hospital, where nine patients and seven staff have tested positive for the virus, AHS said Friday.

Edmonton surpassed the Calgary zone with a number of active cases on Sunday, however, the totals for the two zones have remained close since.

As of Friday, the Calgary area had 208 active cases of COVID-19.

According to AHS, the Calgary area has 1.5 million residents and the Edmonton area has 1.2 million residents.

As for the rest of the province, the North zone has 31 active cases, the South zone 23 and the Central zone three. There are three other active cases in an unknown area.

On Thursday, the province announced that Albertans without symptoms will be able to get tested at 20 community pharmacies, mainly in Calgary and Edmonton.

“This is a meaningful step,” said Health Minister Tyler Shandro on Thursday.

Testing continued to spread across Alberta as the province moved into phase 2 of its stimulus package, slowly reopening the economy in the midst of the pandemic.
