The emergency services have launched a desperate search for a man feared to have drowned after he jumped into the river to save his friend.

The 31-year-old man was submerged in the stretch of river by the village of Cookham, Berkshire, when his friend in trouble yesterday.

The pair is part of a group of six friends who had travelled from Uxbridge in Middlesex for an afternoon by the river.

Police, fire and rescue and air ambulance, all crew members rushed to the scene.

A witness who had been at the edge of the river bank has said that they had seen earlier, the three men blow up the dam and do backflips in the water.

“That was about 4.30 pm. Later, after we had left the edge of the river, we heard loads of police sirens and rushed back, they said.
