In Jacksonville, Florida, to support Alpha Male fighters Darren Elkins and Song Yadong, it was not surprising to see Urijah Faber at UFC on Friday during the ESPN 8 weigh-in.
What was surprising was that he stepped on the scale himself.
After all of the fighters scheduled for Saturday’s show weighed in, Faber was brought to the scales and it was announced that he would register as a possible replacement. Faber arrived at 153.5 pounds, just below the light weight limit, which created some confusion as no light fights are scheduled for the UFC on ESPN 8.
Faber said later ESPN that Song, originally from China, was struggling with visa issues, although her featherweight bout with Marlon Vera was expected to go as planned. Otherwise, it is possible that a lightweight fight between Faber and Vera will be organized, although the UFC has not given any official word on Faber’s specific plans.
The UFC Hall of Fame later clarified the situation via an Instagram post.
“Had about 12 hours to run my juice, visualizing self-confidence on the point (that was about it,”) wrote Faber. “Difficult to refuse a good time, a tough opponent and a bag of money … especially for my birthday! “
Faber turned 41 on Thursday. His message seems to imply that Song’s fight with Vera is a round trip, as he added: “I’m so happy to sit on the bench, everyone is for a treat on Saturday”
Song and Vera both go from bantamweight to 145 pounds for this meeting due to the short-term meeting. Song is undefeated to date in five UFC games, while Vera has won five straight, all by knockout or tender.
