Fans had asked for an apology.
Tyra Banks speaks after problematic clips from “America’s Next Top Model” resurfaced online this week, causing fan outrage.
The show has been accused of promoting black-faced models, fat-gaining and lobbying for cosmetic surgery, among other irregularities, according to social media followers.
“I’ve seen the insensitivity messages from past ANTM moments and I agree with you,” Tyra tweeted Friday. “With hindsight, these are really disjointed choices. “
“Appreciate your honest comments and I send so much love and virtual hugs. “
Although Tyra was not specific about what “choices” she considered “off”, she also did not apologize, some online followers had her unequivocal support.
“@Tyrabanks, you don’t even have to apologize. It was another era AND for entertainment value! Posted a fan, while another wrote, “I THINK YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT JUST WHAT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY WAS. tough, but the modeling industry is not a bitch. “
Others, however, wanted to know more about the TV host.
“Say more about it.” What were the choices? What was wrong? Simple recognition and sincere apologies are not the same thing, ”said a disciple.
The clip resurfaced which seemed to ignite the backlash showed the panel of judges berating candidate Danielle “Dani” Evans for refusing to close the gap in her front teeth in 2006, when they announced that it would leave her “unsaleable” .
“Do you really think you can have a Cover Girl contract with a hole in your mouth?” Tyra asked Dani.
The show, however, asked candidate Chelsey Hersley in 2010 to widen the gap in her front teeth, which sparked cries of racial inequality on social media because Chelsey is white and Dani is black.
It wasn’t the only clip that turned out to be racially problematic for fans, as many went to their Twitter to discuss the episode where white models were painted to represent “Africans,” which prompted one of the models to say, “I’m a Black girl with a nose job,” to which the makeup artist replied, “You are! You are a Jackson. “
Another old clip focused on the race-insensitive moment when a panel judge told candidate Yaya: “You have this intensity to prove your Africanness that I sometimes think is domineering. “
In another season, the judges declared that the competitor Toccaro had to lose 150 pounds to be considered a model, in which Tyra intervened to defend the young woman.
And a clip resurfaced from a photo shoot where producers encouraged a competitor to pose in a grave after hearing news of the death of his best friend really drew the line for some fans.
Dani went to social media on Thursday to remedy the situation, dubbed #GapGate by regulars on the series, Miss J Alexander and Jay Manuel.
She said she finally agreed to partially close the gap to avoid elimination because she was using the show to launch her career and move her out of her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas.
“I had a laser focused lens, nothing or nobody was going to bother me,” she said. “It was not about giving up. It was about understanding what really carried weight and what was of value in my life and teeth were not one of them. “
Dani added a message to “all the young queens” who could have seen and been affected by the episode.
“If I could love you all right now, I would. I want to remind you of your worth, ”she said. “You are a masterpiece, you are loved so much, you are adored and you are magnificent. “
Jay wrote in Dani’s comments section, “Yes … tell your # truth! While Miss J said her speech was “brilliant” at an Instagram Live on Friday. He also promised that the two men would address #GapGate on their live broadcast in two weeks.
