Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish return for a new season of Tuca & Bertie, is scheduled to air on Adult Swim two years after Netflix’s decision to cancel the series.
The network announced on Twitter today that a new season of the animated series, created by former BoJack Horseman producer and artist Lisa Hanawalt, will air in 2021. Adult Swim has ordered 10 episodes, according to The Wrap. The show follows two best friends as they navigate their adult lives with anxiety, relationship issues and career challenges.
” I’ve been a fan of adult swim shows since I was a teenager, so I’m thrilled to bring my beloved chickens to the party and be a new voice for a new decade of absurd, irreverent, but comforting adult entertainment. ” said Hanawalt. The Wrap.
Tuca & Bertie first created on Netflix in May 2019 to praise critics. Despite the glowing praise received, Netflix has decided to cancel the show after one season. In one long tweet thread, Hanawalt noted at the time that despite new people still finding the show every day and the vocal outpouring of support on social media, “none of that makes a difference to an algorithm. The implied message seemed to be that the number of viewers was not what Netflix needed them to, so the show was not renewed.
It’s a traditional move for broadcasters and television networks, but cancellations at Netflix always seemed to be a new phenomenon. Netflix only pursued original content for about seven years, seriously strengthening its commitment to developing original series between 2015 and 2016. Netflix’s early years of development generally meant that shows could take two seasons to find audiences without worry about being canceled. BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg (who also acts as producer on Tuca & Bertie) recognized as such in previous interviews.
“I thought it was the Netflix model back then: to give time for shows to build,” Bob-Waksberg told Los Angeles Times in 2019. “It’s too bad they seem to have moved away from this model. “
BoJack Horseman created when there were only a handful of Netflix originals; Tuca & Bertie came at a time when a plethora of originals were competing and licensed shows like Office and friends for viewers, while relying on an algorithm to bring up a show on a subscriber’s home page. Fans also complained that Tuca & Bertie received little or no marketing compared to other shows like The witcher, and this may have played a role in the low audience.
Either way, Adult Swim takes a new chance Tuca & Bertie, but the irony of the movement is not lost. Netflix has made a name for itself as a streaming service that revives old or canceled shows: Development stopped, The slaughter, Longmire, and Lucifer are just a few. Now Adult Swim is taking over one of Netflix’s orphan shows. Likewise, the ViacomCBS Pop network has taken over the Netflix network One day at a time after the streamer canceled the series.
Today’s news reminds us: Netflix is facing and will continue to experience similar issues that other mainstream TV networks are facing as it turns into a giant.
