The world’s cheapest laptop is powered by a 28-year-old operating system

At $ 99.99 (around £ 85 / AU $ 155), the Pinebook by Pine64 is by far the cheapest new laptop on the market. Although it leaves much to be desired from a material point of view, it has gathered a loyal following all over the world.

Pinebook Laptop – $ 99.99 (about £ 85 / AU $ 155)
The Pine64 Pinebook really couldn’t be cheaper – and it seems smart enough to get started. This Linux laptop may have specs that leave a lot to be desired, but it’s still a great option for Linux students and coding newbies.

Aside from a small screen update, the device has been pretty much unchanged since its launch (and overhaul) in 2017.

At the time, our reviewer said, “If you’re looking for a Linux laptop, look no further. Yes, you will have to get used to the keyboard and the touchpad is hypersensitive – but for Linux students, coding beginners and even children, the Pinebook is a great option not to be overlooked. “

Yes, it’s a Linux laptop (Ubuntu to be more precise) with a MATE desktop environment, but not particularly powerful.

It includes 2 GB of LPDDR3, 16 GB eMMC (although v5.0) and a quad-core AllWinner system-on-chip – a set of components that would barely make it an entry-level 4G smartphone.

The highlights of the device should be the 11.6-inch IPS Full HD display and attractive MacBook Air design (circa 2015). Beyond that, the Pinebook includes a microSD slot, an HDMI port and two USB 2.0 ports, as well as a full-size keyboard with a large touchpad, 10,000mAh battery, Bluetooth, WiFi, and a VGA camera.

We are a little concerned about the 30 day warranty and the fact that the customer has to cover the shipping costs. Although this additional cost will, of course, be offset by the tiny price.

Note, while Pine64 ships to most of the world, international customers may be charged additional fees through customs.
